Ideas For Saving Money

Here is a list of ideas for saving money that I remind myself on a regular basis:

1. Cut your cable bill – these days a lot of tv shows are online already so you really don’t need to be paying the extra $50+ a month.  There are alternatives such as Hulu. If you can’t give up on watching movies consider switching to Netflix streaming as a much cheaper alternative.
2. Keep the minimal amount of money in your bank account – A lot of financial gurus says that you need about 6 months of cash but personally I feel that is way too much especially with a low savings rate. You are much better off putting the money in a decent dividend paying fund where you will at least earn 3~5% in dividend.
3. Take advantage of free customer rewards program – I sign up for a lot of free customer rewards program including those that I have little intention to make a purchase from. A lot of sites offer free points code where you can redeem the code for free merchandise. Since it is free, there is no reason why you shouldn’t take advantage of it.
4. Write a shopping list before going to the store – I am one of those people that supermarket love to target with all the magazines and candies next to the check out line. If you want to save money, be sure to remove any kind of unnecessary impulse purchase and the best way to do that is to have a shopping list before heading to the store!
5. Bring your own lunch to work – when I was in my 20′s I would go out to lunch everyday. A simple meal combo can easily cost between $10~$15. Now I simply bring my own lunch and the saving can really add up. That said, I still go out occasionally with my coworkers for lunch as a mean of social interaction.
6. Always pay off your credit card – Credit card balance is extremely expensive and harmful to your financial future.  If you must keep a balance for some medical and emergency reason, be sure to call up your credit card company and ask for a rate reduction.
7.  Give up expensive habits – Smoking and drinking can get quite expensive (and bad for your health) if you do it on a regular basis.  By giving up on those habits you can live a healthier lifestyle while enrich your financial future.
8. Install a programmable thermostat – You hear about this a lot on television regarding programming thermostat. I usually set mine at 68 degree so I am comfortable in my own house.
9. Service your car on a regular basis – You might think servicing your car is a waste of money but it is one of those tasks I will never skip. I have driven 10 year old cars that is well kept and it really makes a difference. By keeping your car in top performing condition you will save money in the long run.
10. Price compare before you make a large ticket item purchase – Always make sure you compare the price at different stores before making a purchase.
11. Cancel or negotiate your gym memberships – If your goal is to staying healthy there are plenty of activities you can on outdoor. However, if you are like me who enjoy swimming then be sure to negotiate your monthly gym membership price! You shouldn’t pay more than $15 a month in my opinion!

Remember to live frugal everyday!
