TLC Extreme Couponing

I am a frugal person and I don’t like to pay a premium for products knowing that I can get it somewhere else.  That is why I compare shop before a purchase and use rebate sites to get money back on my purchase.  However, there are a lot of people that base their savings on coupon inserts you find in your Sunday newspapers.  There is a new show called Extreme Couponing on TLC that gives the audience a peek into the lives of people who stockpile items with the coupon savings they find (Watch the clip from ABC to get a sense what it is like).

When I was growing up, we used to subscribe to LA Times daily and flipping through coupon inserts on Sundays was a normal ritual for the kids in the family.  If we find something we liked we usually cut that specific coupon so we can purchase it in store.  However, as I grow older and started reading news online, I can’t bring myself to purchase Sunday papers just for the coupon insert.  The idea of throwing away all the paper just doesn’t make much sense to me.  Not being judgmental but the idea of telling my kids to crawl into the dumpster looking for coupons is unthinkable.

While I believe using coupon to save money is a great idea, like all things that are good, it is best to do it in moderation.

Trading or selling your unused gift cards

Now Christmas is over and you unwrapped all your gifts it is time to figure out which gifts are for keep and which are for return.  Chances are you received a number of gift cards as presents.  While I don’t mind receiving gift cards but when I receive a card for a store that I don’t shop at I usually sell my card at Plastic Jungle.  While there are a lot of gift card sites out there, my favorite is Plastic Jungle which has a A rating from Better Business Bureau.

Here is how it works:

You go to Plastic Jungle website and indicate the card you want to sell and the value that is on the card.  Plastic Jungle will give you an offer for your card in either cash or Amazon gift card).  Once you accept it, they will provide you with a prepaid shipping label.  Print out the shipping label and drop it of in the mail and you are done.

As for me, I received a $100 Apple store gift card this Christmas that I decided to sell through Plastic Jungle.  While I enjoy buying Apple products, I find the merchandise a little more pricey in the Apple store.  Trading through Plastic Jungle, I received $92.40 in terms of Amazon gift card.  Since Apple products are usually more than $10 cheaper on Amazon, the money I lost by selling the card to Plastic Jungle is easily made up with the cheaper price of Amazon.  Furthermore, now I have Amazon credit, I can purchase other brand electronics if I change my mind!

If you received unwanted gift card this Christmas, be sure to check out Plastic Jungle!

12/26 Gap 50% Off In Stores Noon Today

This one is for the early birds.  On Gap’s Facebook page they announced that there will be a sale where you can get an extra 50% off all sales items in store today until noon.  If you need to get some clothes for yourself because you didn’t receive as many for Christmas, now it is a good time!

On a side note, I usually go pick up Christmas decorations the day after Christmas as they are usually marked down 50% or more.  Be sure to check out stores like Target if you are looking to add more decoration for next year!

Merry Christmas

Wish everyone a Merry Christmas!  I hope you enjoy your day with your family and friends!

I will be home with my family enjoying Christmas dinner.  =)

Free 4-Hour Workweek ebook by Tim Ferriss

Tim Ferriss, the author of 4 hour workweek, just released a new book called 4 hour body.  As part of his promotion, he is offering ebook version of 4 hour workweek and and The Slow-Carb Cookbook for free.

I read the book when it first came out and it is quite a motivational book.  It focuses on designing your own lifestyle according to the way you wish to live.  While motivational and powerful, it doesn’t mean that you literally only work 4 hours a week.  It means you work really hard and work really smart.  Instead of doing repetitive work week in and week out, outsource time consuming tasks that can be outsourced and accomplished easily.  Focus on the what you want to accomplish rather than what other people say or think.
