Best Buy offers free phone on Fridays

I just heard on the news on my way home today that Best Buy will give out four free phones at all of its stores every Friday this October!  Best Buy will offer one free phone for each of the four carriers (T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon).  While the phone is not truly free as you have to sign a two year service contract with the carrier, it does beat paying $199 on top of signing a two year service contract.  My Verizon plan just expired last week so you can bet that I will be researching the different free phones Best Buy is offering in the upcoming weeks!

Free Phone for October 1st includes:
Samsung Gravity 3 (T-Mobile)
HTC Aria (AT&T)
BlackBerry Curve (Sprint)
Samsung Fascinate (Verizon)

National Coffee Day (9/29)

I am one of those people that needs my morning coffee every day in order to function correctly.  I started brewing my own coffee at home ever since Starbucks constantly increase their coffee prices.  It is crazy how much a cup of coffee cost there these days (the commodity pricing for coffee and sugar have gone up the roof).  If you are a coffee lover, be sure to check out their website on Wednesday!

World’s Scariest Job

There are days where I dislike my job and there are days where I wish I don’t have to work.  Yet, after I seeing videos like this, I am glad that I don’t work at jobs that requires me to climb to great height or deal with anything that might explode at an instant.  Just looking at the video itself makes me nauseous.  Though I have to say that it would be pretty cool if one of those workers do a live streaming/tweeting/blogging while climbing the transmission tower.

Would you ever work at such a dangerous/scariest job?

Great deal from Plum District today if you are a mom, dad, or a caregiver.  They are offering $40 diapers.com certificate for $20.  Shipping is free when you order $49 or more!  If you don’t know what Plum District is, you can read my review here.

Happy Mid Autumn Festival

For those of you who is from Asia, you know that today is Mid Autumn Festival.  In many ways, Mid Autumn Festival is comparable to Thanksgiving here in United States.  It is a holiday where family members get together for dinner and appreciate each other.  Besides Chinese New Year, Mid Autumn Festival is the second largest holiday in Chinese culture.  There are also stories associated with the holiday but I enjoyed it simply for the fact that I get to spend time with family members  (I like Thanksgiving too but I am not too fond of Turkey).  For those of you that are celebrating, Happy Mid Autumn Festival!

$25 iTunes Gift Card Giveaway

Three weeks ago I won a $25 gift card from MyGoodCents courtesy of Plastic Jungle.  As a winner of the giveaway, I was given the choice of selecting any gift cards on Plastic Jungle, a leading gift card exchange site, valued at $25.  At the time I was trying to fix a leaky window so I selected a $25 Home Depot gift card.  I received the gift card a week later and to my dismay the card has $21 instead of the stated $25.  I contacted Plastic Jungle again and they assured me that it was a mistake and they were nice enough for me to select another gift card of my choice.  First of all I was glad to know that this kind business practice Plastic Jungle condone.  Overall, I was very satisfied with Plastic Jungle’s response.

In the end I like to thank Brielle for her quick response and I like to pay it forward.  I selected another $25 iTunes gift card which I like to giveaway to thank my readers of this blog.

How to find discount smog check

Recently I received my car registration notice for next year.  Along with the car registration, I also need to take my car in for a smog check.  As a California resident, the smog check is required for cars that are over five years old.  Being a frugal person, I want to make sure I get the cheapest deal for my smog check.

Here are the steps I took:

1.  Wait for different smog check coupons in coupon booklets such as ValuePack before going to a smog check.

1.  Check the user review sites: (e.g. Yelp) regarding the place you decided to go to.  You want to make sure they don’t lure you in with a cheap price only to fail your car and charge you for repair work.  Although you can get your car repaired anywhere you want, most people will let the same mechanic that performed the smog check fix their car.

In the end, I was able to find a smog check center 5 minutes away from my house that charged $25 for service and $13 for DMV license fee for a total of $38.  It is the cheapest deal I could find.  Let me in the comments section if you were able to get your car smog checked for a cheaper price!

Amazon Mom Review

Amazon introduced a new program named Amazon Mom a few days ago targeting caregivers (not just mom) where you will receive 30% off selected diapers and wipes when you use Amazon Subscription.  (You can modify/cancel the subscription anytime).  The program also offers free Amazon Prime for 3 months.

From a deal perspective, the 30% off selected diapers deal has been there on and off for awhile now and so has the 3 months free Amazon Prime shipping.  It looks like Amazon is packaging the two deals together and give it a name that is easier to remember.  Either way, it is a decent deal for those of you who have diaper needs and often times Amazon gives  additional discount code for being part of their mailing list!

(P.S. Remember you can get one year Prime shipping for free if you are a college student).

InstantCashSweepstakes.com introduces $2 drawing every 4 hours

Instantcashsweepstakes.com officially introduced a new $2 drawing every 4 hours in addition to daily $50 drawing.  I have been a fan of InstantCashSweepstakes.com ever since I won $50 drawing earlier this year.  If you haven’t heard of this website, it allows you to do short surveys (multiple choice questions) in exchange for a chance to win small amount of cash.  You will also win tickets and coins with each set of survey questions where you can purchase additional entry into the $2 and $50 drawings.

On a side note, they mentioned on their blog that any account that is not active within one month will have their earning forfeited.  So if you decided you no longer have extra time for short surveys but still have vested money in your account, be sure to cash out the money within a month.  Good luck!

How to turn off Google Instant

Google introduced Google Instant yesterday where you get search results immediately with each character you type.   The new feature looks fancy and cool initially but after awhile I am starting to get annoyed with all the images flying by.  I found the above video on Life Hacker regarding how to turn off the feature if you are like me.

There has been a lot of chatter regarding the impact of this in regard to SEO.  The first thought that came to mind is the impact of search on the long tail of keywords.  For those people that optimize their sites for long tail keywords, there might be a drop in traffic as a result of the change.  As for Adword, will people be bidding for partial character phrases now?  Previously I have been receiving around 20 daily visitors for this site as a result of searching on Google for varies topics.  I will be interested to see in the upcoming months whether this changes as a result of the new Google Instant feature.  So far the search traffic has stayed constant for the past two days.  Are you thinking about whether Google Instant will impact your search traffic?
