The value of disappointment

As part of my vacation through southern California I spend a whole day yesterday visiting Disneyland theme park.  One of the main attraction of Disneyland is their nightly fireworks.  Playing to the Disney music, fireworks is among the best I have seen.  As I waited on Disneyland main street for the clock to strike 9:30, the announcer started to announce  “due to high wind condition, the fireworks might be delayed for a couple minutes.”  The announcement continued for about twenty minutes until 9:50 when the firework is officially canceled.

The moment the firework is officially canceled, you immediately hear kid’s crying voice break out everywhere throughout the main street.  Even though I seen the fireworks endless number of times I feel for those kids (and parents).  For many of them they have been waiting for hours just for a glimpse of the firework before they mark the end to their Disneyland journey.  As I head for the exit, I started to hear kids saying they want to come here again just for the fireworks (very good business for Disney), I realized that this is a good lesson for the kids.  Even though they might not have seen the fireworks that night the feeling of disappointment will linger on much longer and  keep them motivated and strive for the goal once again.  In the end, it is a much valuable experience then the actual fireworks.

With that, my journey through southern California continues through the scotching hot inland empire.

Borders free

Borders is currently trying to promote their free eReader app by offering a free small brewed coffee.  If you are a smart phone, this is not a bad deal at all as the app itself is free.

Free one year Amazon Prime for College Students

It seems like Amazon is getting ready to target college students a few weeks before the start of school with the newly Amazon student program.  The program offers a one year Amazon Prime shipping ($79 value) for college students who is registered and have a valid .edu email address.

For those of you that don’t know what Amazon Prime Shipping is, it is two days shipping instead of the normal three to five days shipping.  For those of you, like myself, whose college days are long gone, Amazon still offers free Amazon Prime Shipping for one month!

Create your own Google Android application with App Inventor

Are you one of those people that has jumped into the smart phone?  With my contract coming up in two months, I am debating whether it is worth it to get a smart phone.  While I am still cannot justify the monthly cost of a smart phone, seeming YouTube videos such as App Inventor by Google certainly makes it a lot more attractive.

Even though there are a lot of apps out there, some times it might be easier to create the app that you fits your needs yourself.  It might be something simple where you can just drag and drop the commands.  If they can offer a tool comparable to Dreamweaver for building websites, it will be a big plus for the Android smart phone.  It looks like App Inventor is a step toward the right direction.  You can read more details here.

New Consular Fees increase on July 13th, 2010

I wanted to post this a couple days back but it keep slipping my mind.  If you are planning on traveling in the next couple months, be sure to apply for your passport before July 13th.  On July 13th, there will be a set of fee increases to consular services such as getting a passport.  The price for adult will increase from $100 currently to $135 while minors will go from $85 to $105.  While not all items are an increase of price, definitely go through the list and see if any of the service you need is increasing its price and get it done before July 13th!

Post Office proposes price increase for stamps

Post office is proposing once again beginning on January 11th of next year.  While I don’t send out as many mail or cards as I use to, I still have to send out a couple of bills through regular postal mail every month.  While I don’t mind the price increase as much I absolutely hate it when I have to go look for one cent stamps as a result of the price increase.  My solution?  Purchase a pack of forever stamps from Costco so you never have to worry about finding those one cent stamps!

Here is a history of stamp price increase:

  • January 2001: The cost per ounce increases by a penny to 34 cents.
  • June 2002: The cost per ounce jumps by 3 cents to 37 cents.
  • January 2006: The cost per ounce goes to 39 cents.
  • April 2007: The post office comes out with the “forever stamp,” which carries the first-class mail postage rate for packages 1 ounce and lighter, making it easier for those who don’t want to deal with the USPS’s changing postage prices.
  • May 2007: Another 2-cent increase sends the per-ounce price to 41 cents.
  • May 2008: A more modest hike, as the USPS only raises the rate by 1 cent, to 42 cents.
  • May 2009: Yet again, postage per ounce increases by 2 cents, to 44 cents.
  • January 2011: The USPS has proposed to raise postage per ounce to 46 cents — another 2-cent increase.
