Frugal Reading

2009 Earning Review

I started this blog a little more than a year ago as a reference for myself in regards to different ways to make money online, good reference websites and frugal tips as the economy started to tank. Maintaining a website takes a lot more work than I expected even with WordPress (One of the best blogging platform out there).

Here is my earning summary for 2009:
Recurring Earnings
Adsense Earning $92.49
MySurvey $120.00
HCD Surveys $20.00
Pinecone Research $45.00
SurveySavvy $24.50
Swagbucks Amazon Gift Card $145.00
youdata $9.16
instantcashsweepstakes $2.33
Communispace $130.00
Adgitize $18.76
Inbox Dollars $27.00
Borders Reward Bucks $15.00
MyPoints Gift Card $85.00

Here are earnings from winning drawings/contest:
Threadless.com Gift Card: $135.00
Microsoft Survey: $10.00
American Express Gift Card: $50.00
Shell Gift Card: $60.00

My total earning for the year 2009 was $989.24 with a cost of $125.40 hosting fee with BlueHost. $989.24 – $125.40 = $863.84. The number is actually pretty bad consider I put in about an hour almost everyday so my hour rate would actually be $863.84/350 = $2.46.  :)

Although I must say I truly enjoyed the time I spend online and it didn’t feel like work at all.  The main problem is most of the earning list above was a result of time and sweat and not referral.  For the year 2010, I would like to increase my referral earning.  Another area I might explore is the buying and selling of sites through different means such as Flippa.

Whatever your blogging goal is, best of luck for the upcoming new year!

  • Congratulations to your Online earnings!

It’s a tough time especially if you want to earn online, usually you have to work more than 10 minutes (up to one hour) to get between 10 cents or 1 $.
I register in late 2008 for several survey companies but after two months it was for me too much work for less than 1$, especially when you start the survey and after some minutes you are not qualified. They collect your data but you don’t get paid for unqualified work :(

At the moment i focus more on blogging and new fresh content for my blogs which will give me in the long run a better return and some passive income (Adgitize… Adsense… MyLot… CMF Ads… Earnstar.de)

  • I think that developing your blog and adding content is better for your earnings in the long run. It will take awhile to add up, but over time I think that you will see the benefits as the site and pages age.

  • You have done better than most, but like Cornyman says, the time spent onoine earning is substantially less than you would get in any far flung sweat shop! Treat is a a hobby and the money a bonus and most of us can live with that!
    Happy New Year from Bulgaria

    Hi Martin,
I like a couple of survey sites like HCDSurvey (watch video regarding political news), MySurvey & Pinecone research (consumer products). Although I will probably cut back on those this year as well.

I am currently participating in Adgitize, Adsense, and CMFAds. I will check out MyLot and Earnstar.de.

Good luck in the upcoming year!

    Hi Kidgas,
I definitely agree having better content will help in the long run. I will try to write longer posts for 2010.

    Hi Martin in Bulgaria,
The earning is definitely on the low side but I definitely enjoyed the time spend online. It didn’t feel like work and like you mentioned, it is definitely a bonus.

  • Hello,

I just want to congratulate you for your earnings in 2009. It’s almost near you’ll reach the amount of $100 in adsense. Mine there was banned 1 year ago.

Anyway, congrats once again. May you have a fruitful 2010.

    Healthytipsy,
there are actually other programs out there that is as good as adsense and it is one of the area in which I will be exploring in 2010.

best of luck to you for the 2010!

  • What a neat idea! I plan on doing this and updating monthly what I earn. I don’t spend too much time a day, but it all adds up!
I blogged about your neat idea here:

Also, have you joined Treasure Trooper yet? I have been a member for years and you get paid through Paypal or a check each month when you reach $20. You get money for completing offers, completing surveys, clicking links, and shopping. You can join here:

  • I too have been tracking my on-line earnings at justthrowmoney.blogspot.com. I hadn’t divided it out yet, but was guessing about $2.50 an hour. It’s just too much work except for the parts that I actually like, or are “timeless” like using Swagbucks. I appreciated seeing someone else actually work this out too.

  • Just wanted to say I really liked the post. You have really put a lot of time into your posts and it is just wonderfull!

  • [...] and hosting fee with BlueHost.  $1035.46  – 140.40 = $895.06.  Comparing to how I did for 2009, I would say it is about the same which is fairly disappointing.  The majority of the earning is [...]
