Frugal Reading

Frugality and Water Conservation

Due the the change in weather patterns in the last couple years, the place I called home (as well as many regions in U.S.) has experience a number of dry winters.  As a result, the water supply level here has reached a very low level.  Additional commercials have been created to promote the importance of water conservation.  Think for a moment what our lives will be if we are unable to access water that is so crucial to our daily lives.  This is a case where it is no longer about frugality but rather necessity and preserve a good living environment for the upcoming years.

Here are some tips for indivduals to save water (the last few applies especially those that lives in the East Bay region in San Francisco Bay area).

- Water your lawn only when it needs it.  Adjust the number of minutes depending on weather and specific month.

- Fix leaky faucets, and toilets.

- Don’t use hose to wash your car.  Instead, use a water bucket to wipe and only rinse at the end.

- Shorten your showers and change to a more efficient shower head.

- Only wash a full load when doing laundry.

- Use a broom to clean decks/driveways/garage instead of washing these structures

- Setup automatic water dripping system instead of watering with a hose.

- Notify your water company if you see water leakage on the side walk or the street.  one of the pipe that brings water to your house might be leaking and need to be replaced.

- audit your water usage by requesting a free self-audit kit.

- check additional rebate offering for your water company.  My water company is ebmud and they are currently have a number of rebates offerings.

- check whether your water company offers free conservation items to help water conservation.
